1) Has rapid industrial development been a blessing or a curse for Americans?
John Rockefeller - Rapid industrial development is a blessing because the business can start growing quick and make a lot of money and a lot of product for the consumer. Your business, with the right ideas and people, can grow really fast and the owner can make a lot of money.
Terrence Powderly-Rapid industrial development was a curse because the business tried to make to much money to fast without trying to think of the people making the products that make the company money. This is why i believe its a curse because the company cares about money they don't care about the workers making them money.
2) Were big businesses leaders "captions of industry" or "robber barons"?
President McKinley-Whereas large business leaders to give a lot towards the nation's overall success, small business owners are suffering. It is a win-loss situation for the vast majority of the people. More jobs are available with larger businesses, while there is less opportunity towards small business owners.
3) Should businesses be regulated closely by the government?
Jane Addams- I believed that businesses should be regulated closely by the government but not so closely because of one reason. In which, this one reason is that businesses can become too powerful that they would not allowed their workers to have rights. Therefore, these rights are very important to workers or else America will not economic will not grow.
4) Should businesses be allowed to combine and reduce competition?
John Rockefeller - I believe that if your business becomes to large, the owner of the business can try to diminish its competition to grow his own business. Just like what I did. I lowered the prices so much that the little oil refineries could make any money and they just went out of business. I then formed a very large monopoly in the oil refining industry.
Terrence Powderly- I believe that if a business become to large, that we should be able to combine our competition to bring prices down to make the commons mans life easier. If business try to reduce competition then it makes it harder on us because we are making less but the price for things is getting higher
5) Can workers attain economic justice without violence?
President McKinley-Yes, violence is never an answer. Workers can protest peacefully without causing any harm. They can go on strike, they can express their beliefs to their authorities. Violence only causes more struggles.
Jane Addams-Well, of course workers can attain economic justice without violence by expressing their wants and needs of theirs' rights through nonviolent resistance that will not harm anyone, but showing the peace of it that will bring out the economic justice.
